It was a wonderful experience to be able to create a mini digital movie. I had seen some students do this before, and thought it could not be very complicated. Boy was I wrong! I tend to actually enjoy technology, but I see that I have a lot of catching up to do.
I feel thought hat his experience was nothing short of exceptional at least for me. I feel I had a very good team, where everybody was able to collaborate and work equally.
It was fun to see the different levels of Final Cut that everyone had last night. Of all the videos my favorite was Allan's team. Their B-shots were very nice.
I know now that if I can get my school to buy me Final Cut(fingers crossed) I will be able to show my students the basics, and then learn with them as we go on.
I hope this session served everyone else as much as it did me. I really am learning a lot during this institute and am valuing the time we are spending here.

Yeah, that's the rub. I wonder if you can get a grant to pay for Final Cut. Availability of money for technology is what's holding a lot of us back, I think.

I whole agree. The only thing that would have made this night at the Oscars (Sort of speak) would have been popcorn. Nevertheless, the lessons learned in video production were invaluable to and eventually to my students.

I was very impressed with the films, and I was especially struck with the variety of videos created on a topic such as heat. While we did not actually sit down, story-map, and assign each group a focus, we still had 11 videos that were unique and told a different story.
ReplyDeleteI loved the idea of focusing on then and now, the pedal cabs, and the immigrant who was surprised to find that the US is hot. Each story had a focus, and each story was fun.
I congratulate all of you for finding great subjects, discovering great stories, and creating interesting projects.

It was great to see how each of our groups took the same topic, coping with the heat, and developing their own interpretation by finding a diverse group of people to interview.
ReplyDeleteMaking the video was a learning experience, and seeing what everybody else did was educational. Having Dave Cornelius to help was invaluable.
Hopefully I"ll be able to get a copy of Final Cut (lite) or Pro, and hopefully one of our computers will be able to run it.

I enjoyed doing the movie. It let me put to use long dormant skills learned while earning a tv production degree and working as a copywriter.
ReplyDeleteI knew how to put a story together, write a script, direct and produce - but I had only done tape to tape editing and had never used final cut pro. My husband uses it all the time in his role as a producer/director. So it was nice for me to learn something that I can go back home and say "ha! Watch me now!"
I enjoyed working with my group. It's funny when people come together, each with their own ideas and visions, some that they may not be totally able to articulate at first. Then having to sit and collaborate and produce a final product that everyone is proud to put their name on.
Since our school has final cut pro on all it's macs, I know that this is definitely a skill that will not go to waste. That is once we find some cameras... After that, it's lights, camera, action!

I got FinalCut Express last summer for the education rate of $160 or thereabouts. You can do everything you did to make your Reynolds Institute videos in FinalCut Express. It's quite robust.
