Not the Final Cut

When Photoshop first came out, or at least when I first got my hands on it sometime in the 90s, I was an instant addict. I spent hours editing photos and seeing how far I could go. Well, Final Cut is just as addictive and I may have to start calling 12 Step Programs. This isn't finished but it was so much fun creating. I want to just play away with it.

  1. Way to go, Carol!

Everyone: Getting that first video out there will break down a lot of barriers when it comes to adding this skill to your repertoire. You'll get better and better with each effort. As I mentioned in my video-editing session, it helps to find an excuse to take on video projects. For me, it was making silly videos to go with a grammar/usage blog (you can see them on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/irewrite). The first ones didn't even involve a video camera, as I didn't own one at the time.

Some people think video is the domain of kids and computer nerds. But if I can do it, however simply, anyone can do it.

  3. Is this what you did after I left the lab today? You must have been there for hours!!! Really fun to watch. Nice shot composition, too. It really shows off the building and your anchor seemed really professional. ;0)
This is what we should aim to do as the video is such a powerful draw to the message.

  4. For everyone who has commented on my "broadcast" personality... Thank you. That's what four years of competitive high school debate will do for you. I've also coached for the last six years, and tried to keep up my public speaking skills that way.

Journalism and speech, if you ask me, go hand in hand. You cannot be a bumbling idiot when it comes to talking to folks and still be a good journalist. If your school offers a speech program, encourage your kids to check it out. I know most of our students are stretched thin as it is, but I wouldn't be where I am now if it were not for my collective high school experience, speech AND journalism AND yearbook included.

If you can even get your kids to COVER the speech team for a feature story, it would be a great experience... And they might discover something they love.

  5. Carol,

I have been working in video for close to 25 years and continue to find new techniques and find the opportunity to learn new skills. It is one of the things I like most about media and filmmaking. As I believe some others have mentioned there are video tutorials all over the internet. As time allows I will begin to post links for those I come across.
