Hey all! I'm counting down the days until I will be warm again. See, I grew up in Southern California (Claremont, home of Scripps College so at least one of you know where that is). But after a year of college I thought, "heck, why do this the easy way? get married, start a family, and then finish your degree." So I married an Idaho boy, who eventually joined the Forest Service (but not until I'd finished my B.A. in English). We ended up in Idaho again about 11 years ago, he quit forest servicing and joined the faculty at BYU-Idaho, and I finally decided to become a teacher, like-I-always-should-have.
So I'm in Idaho, and it's been 55 degrees for the past 5 days. It's summer, dang it! I shake my fist at the weather gods. But since Steve says it's a "cool" below-100 in Phoenix, I can bide my time. I will be warm again! (technically, though, 55 is also below 100. . . )
My youngest graduated from high school last year, so I've had more time on my hands than usual. My newspaper class produces a paper a month, but it's looking more and more like a collection of scrapbook pages and less and less like a newspaper. One of the boys found a 20 year old copy of the paper and said "cool. it looks like a newspaper." Now that I've got his and others' attention, I really want to help them turn away from the dark side. I'm so excited that this institute is going to help me along that path! And I don't have to pay for it! And I WILL BE WARM AGAIN.

Hi Julie - Sorry, hate to tease, but after growing up on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, then moving to Orange County, California for 25 years, I have now been living on the island of Maui, Hawaii, for four years, and I don't understand the concept of 55 degrees - heh, heh. Actually, aside from heckling you, I wanted to comment on your "collection of scrapbook pages" remark. You're very right. Our kids today are used to designing Web pages, specifically Facebook pages, which are heavy on the graphics, photos, video, and music and light on the text. I agree that in this day, it is sometimes our job to reign in this scrapbooking style while still encouraging fresh and innovative creativity. I should know. For the past three years, we have dominated in district and state awards in the areas of layout and design, photography, illustration, and cartooning, while I watch other schools continually take home all the writing awards. In other words, our paper is pretty, but empty. I look forward to learning ways to balance the look and the content.
