Organizing our publication

Last night, the participants of this institute organized our publication in what I believe was record time. Our four managing editors- Jessica, Mark, Ari, and Ashley – did a fantastic job of placing teachers into teams to choose story ideas. The individual teams then regrouped to share their ideas and battle out any duplicates. Luckily, it seemed like there were no overlapping story ideas. There were a plethora of fantastic stories ranging from the Phoenix Downtown Farmers Market to ASU and their partnership with the AZ Republic to the number of 2nd career teachers attending the institute.

Not only were stories assigned during the planning session, but it also calmed my nerves about this assignment. I was nervous about what was expected of me, especially when I had no idea what I was even writing about. Now that I have a direction, I feel much more at ease. I am thankful that the session last night only lasted one hour; especially after Steve Elliot shared that last year’s institute ran until 10p.m. We’re a rockin’ group!

  1. I was really impressed by how smoothly everything went as well! Choosing story ideas has always been an incredibly chaotic process, but it did not turn out that way for us. Everyone was so willing to work together, and things were so organized that it kept us from getting stressed out at all. I'm still nervous, but I think last night definitely helped to make things seem a bit more manageable - especially since one of our editors provided that easy-to-follow deadline chart.

And wow, 10pm! I'm so glad that wasn't us. We are an awesome bunch.

  2. When I originally heard that previous groups had spent the process arguing and screaming at one another my initial thought was: what did I get myself into? Though I would have to agree that because of what I consider to be an awesome group, I don't foresee that happening. Hopefully I haven't spoken too soon!

  3. I'm glad it went smoothly. I think that success can be attributed to the professionalism and sincerity with which everyone has handled this assignment. I think we are all trying to model the practices that we want our students to use.

Keep up the good work everyone! It seems like we're doing well, so far!
