Photoshop for Dummies

While Steve Elliott advertised his PhotoShop session as one for "computer phobes" (which I am not), I found the basic introduction to Photo Shop extremely helpful.

In the session, I learned how to: open an image, rotate an image, adjust the mode, adjust image size, adjust image quality, correct red eye, add a stroke frame, sharpen an image, crop an image and straighten the horizon line.  For someone, like me who only knew how to change the image size and adjust the resolution to the publisher's specifications, this was a huge knowledge leap. We learned how to do all of these things by practicing on sample "bad photos."  We then took a photo and worked in PhotoShop to correct it.  Here's my fixed photo (above right) of fellow neophyte and San Diegan, Jill Bhowmik.

I was then apply to apply my new knowledge to our deadline task.  I fixed this picture of Dean Chris Callahan (above left) without even having to refer to my notes!

I declare victory for today!

  1. This session was extremely effective, mostly due to the fact that very little time elapsed between the time when we learned how to do Photo-shop and the time when we applied our learning to a real assignment.

Previous to the Photo-shop session, I was completely unaware of the freedom we had to use Photo-shop with our publications. I had taken the rule that no photos can be altered to mean that Photo-shop was not allowed in any capacity at all. Yes, my students cropped photos in inDesign, but now the options have expanded. I feel so liberated to know that we can change the levels and sharpen the image in order to salvage photos rather than having to cut them entirely.

Being the subject of Becky's photo also allowed me a window of what it is like to be a photo in a school paper. Despite knowing that Becky was going to publish my picture, it was still surprising and fun to see how she chose to do it.
