All the way from Baltimore

Looking forward to meeting you all next week, and figuring out just what I agreed to a couple months ago. This fall I'll take over the school paper at Northwestern High, The Compass. I was born in Baltimore, over east, but grew up outside Philly, went to school in Nashville, TN (Belmont University English Writing/ Literature), and fish and hunt in West Virginia. Other than what I've read, I have no background in journalism. Naming me adviser was a vote of confidence from my administration (great people who believe in the Compass as the student voice) and the teacher who built it into an excellent student run paper. As you might imagine, teaching in Baltimore City, there are a few issues to overcome when considering student journalism. Not the least of which is that the average sophomore reads on a fifth grade level. The CTE program, my media and journalism classes offer my students escape routes, tangible skills to serve them in the city and beyond. I consider the Reynolds Institute imperative to their success and look forward to working with you all.

  1. Where do you hunt and fish in West Virginia? I grew up in a town called "The Gateway to Monogahela National Forest." It is really beautiful there. I want to hear about it.

  2. I spent my time in Tucker Co. and into Randolph, going to Elkins and the like. Beautiful country. Our land is bordered on three sides by the Monongahela, so it's very idyllic.
