Forgive me, oh Type God, for I have sinned

Tracy Collins of the Arizona Republic spoke to us this afternoon, and it is clear he has an unusual grasp of type. Wow! Did I learn a FREAKING lot.

Before I forget, here is my repentence:

I will kern!
I will sherpa my reader!
I will put type there for the reader, not the designer!
I will not use default settings.
I will never mess with vertical scale.

I believe, I believe, I believe!

  1. Teresa, what a creative blog you've posted.

As I watched several of my newspapers go up in "flames" during Collins' presentation, I realized just how much more patient I need to be when laying out our publication.

The lesson was indeed a good one, and I definitely heard some things that I recall from just a few years ago in college. Now I need to make sure I teach these same cardinal rules of design to my students.

  2. I agree! I think I might even post some of these quotes in my room. I've always settled for good enough, though now I think I'm going to take more time on pages and fix the details.
