We can rebuild them — we have the technology

As I saw a page from my paper flash on the screen all I could think was, “Oh, crap. This is going to suck more than anything else has ever sucked in the history of sucking.”

Tonight the ASNE Reynolds High School Journalism fellows got their first lesson on newspaper layout. I was lucky enough to be one of the examples of what not to do. At first I was somewhat worried about having my work critiqued by Tracy Collins. But I was wrong; in fact, this was one of the best experiences I have had at the institute so far.
Yes it is hard having something you worked on critiqued, but on all honesty I was just ecstatic that what was wrong could be fixed.

The first session on the issues in typography in high school newspapers was not only enlightening, it was extremely useful. In every issue my kids and I are scraping from space on each page, seeing how many inches can be freed up and changing the out of the box settings was astonishing.

I am thinking about giving my students each an edition from a pervious year and allowing them to redesign it after I teach them what I learned today. This is just another reason I cannot wait to get back and get cracking.
