The 2009 edition of the ASNE Reynolds High School Journalism Institute kicked off its first full day today with a session led by Marty Kaiser, the ASNE president and an editor at The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. His talk to the 35 teachers involved with high school newspapers addressed some of the challenges that the newspaper industry is now struggling to overcome and how media outlets need to experiment with solutions that meet the needs of their readers.
During his talk, Kaiser also discussed his project about drunk driving in the state of Wisconsin and that newspapers have a long history of crusading for causes.
Andrew Leckey:
The day wrapped up with dinner and a presentation by Andrew Leckey about covering the financial meltdown. Leckey told teachers that they need to instill that they do not need to be afraid of numbers. Numbers help quantify tings and give them scale. He also said that writers need to make every story a local story.

ReplyDeleteThis is a unique approach to telling the story of our day. It shows the importance of pictures in reporting. I think the bottom photo of Leckey is espsecially powerful, especially since it serves to illustrate a presentation that focused on the economic meltdown. I am already a fan and look forward to the rest of your photo-documentation of our time here.
