Mr. Kaiser's presentation

Mr. Kaiser's presentation last night I thought came at a good time in journalism education as we as educators need to consider how we are going to change what we teach to meet what students will need to know to be productive, and especially those who will be entering the field.

The traditional skills associated with journalists will still be needed, and then on top of that add the needs of online reporting and creation. Then there are the audio and video components so our instruction will, out of necessity, become more challenging to incorporate everything into available class time and also acquire appropriate software and equipment.

I thought he illumniated well the tough position newspapers are now in, with the loss of advertising revenue and the multitude of news and advertising alternatives the public now has available. How does print media adapt to meet these challenges and keep it's place in our society is what I got out of his message.

On a different note, it was so good to become acquainted with everybody through the introductions Sunday night. Even with my 16 years of journalism teaching I am a newbie in terms of the coming emphasis on online journalism and the changes that will demand. If you need/want help with the "old school" things I know well, or just want to hear a few good stories, I always have time.
