The fellows at the ASNE Reynolds’ institute at the Cronkite School of Journalism at ASU received the hopeful news that they all needed to hear. During introductions later in the day many of the fellows discovered that they were all on the same small lifeboat, subsisting on what little they knew about journalism. I myself had been teaching journalism for three years without any real understanding of journalistic writing. Hearing that many other teachers had started teaching journalism or were still teaching under similar circumstances made a world of difference. Perhaps it is like the old adage says, “misery loves company” but I like to think of it as seeing that survival is possible and that my questions are shared by others in the crowd.
