In preparation for Thursday's session on sports writing and our trip to see the Diamondbacks play, I thought I would share some of my husband's sports stories.
My husband Kevin has been a staff writer for the San Diego Union-Tribune in the Sports Department for almost five years. His regular year-round beat is North County high school sports, but he also covers University of San Diego football and the Chargers. The first two stories are Chargers stories and the second two are high school features.

I frequently use his stories as models when teaching my students about effective news and feature writing, especially if we're talking about leads. I think Kevin has a knack for colorful writing and engaging his reader.
He recently won an award for best high school coverage in California.

What well-written stories you have treated us to, Becky!
ReplyDeleteThe ones on the high school students, especially, really tug at your heart and you are able to feel their pain, especially the wrestler.
I'm definitely not a sports fan, but I really did enjoy reading your husband's stories. Do you think he'd mind me using the two on the high school students as examples of feature stories?
