Teachers watch news update in real time

The 35 participants of the Reynolds High School Journalism Institute in Phoenix, Ariz. were treated to a tour of the Arizona Republic newsroom during a particularly interesting day Friday.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who previously has been critical of Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his immigration policies, was in town to meet face-to-face with the top lawman. This story updated continuously as protesters on both sides began to convene on downtown Phoenix.

During the journalists' visit to the newsroom, Web editor Mark Lauffer updated information in real time. As he talked to us, new information continuously fed across his desk, and in his drive to maintain the nearly 100 million hits a month to azcentral.com, he made sure news updated quickly and accurately.

  1. Can't believe you posted this picture! Could you send it to me? I found out later that Mark (Lauffer of the AZ Republic) and I were on the Daily Kent Stater together back in the 80s -- we didn't even realize it until we started talking in the hall -- what a small world!
