Not Just a Matter of Opinion

The matter of opinion writing now has a new meaning to me, and the way in which I direct my opinion writers will be totally different once I return to my campus in August.

Le Templar, of East Valley Tribune definitely provided a unique approach to opinion writing during his discussion early Wednesday. I now understand how important it is to stress the following to my students:

Seek: newsworthy topic, verifiable facts, internal consistency, source attribution, fairness and of course to be ethical.

Avoid: fiction and unfounded examples and sudden leaps in logic.

As the newspaper advisor I will definitely be taking on a different approach with my two returning opinion writers. These two bubbly young ladies are quite inquisitive and are always approaching me with potential stories. From now on I will make sure that I review their opinion stories just as I would a typical news story.

It will be my main priority to not discourage their ideas, but to instead make sure that we aren't turning our opinion page(s) into a gossip ring.
