Tracy Collins throws candy and knowledge

Tracy Collins (seen on the left), the charismatic Senior Director of Operations at the Arizona Republic, briefed the fellows on design essential in newspapers. He discussed layout and design, and also critiqued a handful of papers.

Now I know what kern is (the space between individual letters, usually in a headline, that makes use of negative space).

The thing to take away from Collins' presentation is that design should guide the reader. It should not detract from the story. All of the mistakes we can make at our publications have already been made by the professionals, that's another thing to remember.

The highlight of the session (aside from the candy bag) was the critique. In this multimedia session, Collins showed the advisers what he would have done if he were in their place. It was fascinating to see the pages transformed from one slide to the next. He cropped photos, put bylines at the bottom of the page, rearranged pull quotes and even headlines. Pictures surrounded by type in a U shape, y'know, that is one classy look. Just to see what can be done with the right skill set is inspiring and makes all the difference.
