Handing off batons

To paraphrase Richard Nilsen, you can use all the fancy editing and whiz bang jiggers you want, but what makes a great story is having something to say.

Nilsen has been a reporter and feature writer for the Arizona Republic for 22 years. His cluttered desk and welcoming smile made me feel quite comfortable during our tour of the AZ Republic.

As I strolled by, Nilsen, like a good reporter, was curious to know what our group was doing there. We talked for a few minutes, and then I had to rejoin the group.

It wasn't so much what Nilsen said that impressed me; it was the way he made me feel. While we chatted, I rather felt like Tiger Woods was taking time out of his daily routine to give me a few golf tips.

Curiosity is not only the key to fighting boredom, it's also the key to good reporting. Fortunately, for reporters, there is no key for fighting curiosity.
