What Am I Forgetting?

Like so many other people, I have this unsettling paranoia that I am going to forget something when I pack. Granted, we're traveling to Arizona, not Siberia, and I imagine that there are stores that could provide any of the things I could possibly forget.
But nonetheless, I'm sitting on the floor in m
y living room (well, in my ONLY room... I live in a studio apartment) while my cat makes a nest in my suitcase and I try to peer around the mountain of clothes that I've pulled from the closet and tossed into my "maybe I'd wear this" pile (sid
enote: why is EVERYTHING in my
maybe pile?). My cat, Daisy, is looking at my like, "You cannot possibly be considering leaving me here..."

I'm sure we've all received the same emails, regarding dress, what to bring, all that jazz... But I like to feel prepared (and I also like to overthink things), so I thought I'd throw a post up and see if anyone else is struggling with a packing debacle. Or if anyone has thought of novel things to bring that have sl
ipped my mind completely.

I know we've been told "business casual" is the nicest we'll need to dress, but that we can also wear what we'd wear to
class. I don't know
about anyone else, but my classroo
m is a pretty casual environm
ent. I often get mistaken for a student (this could also be because I'm only 5 years out of high school myself). But for me, jeans, sandals (it is San Diego, after all) and tshirts are pretty standard. The tower of clothes next to
me, though, looks like a lot more than jeans and tshirts.

Technologically speaking, I've got my laptop... point and shoot digital (I was going to borrow a nice digital SLR from school, but it decided to crap out on me last
week), headphones (because my iphone is rather useless
without them), and all the necessary cords for uploading and charging. I was tempted to bring my handheld CatchPhrase game, because I'm slightly obsessed with it (and it's great for those 5 minutes left right before the bell in class), but I'm not sure we'll have lots of time
for game-playing.

I was excited to see that the hotel has a fitness center... Although from glancing over our agenda, I'm not sure how much time (or energy) I'll have to actually take advantage of it. But I'm still bringing my running shoes and some gym clothes. Does anyone else like yoga? Working out is a great form of stress relief for me, but I also get unmotivated pretty easily. If anyone wants a workout buddy, sign me up. :)

I've also got bottles of sunscreen (I happen to be pretty much the whitest person alive, despite living in San Diego) and aloe (because regardless of w
hat I do, I will burn). I've got a book or too (also a relaxation escape for me... I am an English teacher, after all). I also crochet, but I'm not so sure 100+ degree weather is going to ma
ke me want to carry around fuzzy balls of yarn to make scarves out of.

But aside from the obvious basics, I'm at a loss. I feel like there are things that I SHOULD be packing and throwing into my pile... But I'm at a loss. I'm starting to feel a little frazzled,
because (just like all of you) I leave tomorrow m
orning. I also don't want to end up packing 5 bags for two weeks (I'm trying to keep myself to one... but with shoes alone, I've got a problem...). So before my head explodes.... any suggestions?

  1. I also teach dance, so my daily classroom wear is workout type clothes. So, I too am debating what to bring. I'm also not sure because I know it will be hot, but cool in the air conditioning. I love yoga and am packing my mat and some DVDs to do in my hotel room. See ya tomorrow.

  2. Okay, I thought I was the only one having an issue with packing. I've emptied my suitcase about 10 times, and my bed is covered with clothes as I type on my bedroom floor. The whole "business casual" has simply thrown me for a loop.

DFW airport here in Texas will charge me $150 if my luggage is over 50 pounds or larger than 62 inches (L x W x H), so I'm struggling to say the least.

I'm assuming jeans won't be very popular during the workshops, but I think I've packed at least five pair given that we will be going to a baseball game and that we do have evenings and a weekend. I've also packed for the fitness center. We will be busy, but I'm determined to make time to workout.

Altogether I've got a collection of capris, slacks, skirts, shorts, polo shirts and sleeveless blouses on my bed... HELP!!!

Packing my carry-on has been the easiest task so far, as I too am bringing along my Nikon SLR, Laptop, etc.

Also Jess, it's good to know that I'm not the only one often mistaken for a student at my school. (I'm six years removed from high school myself). Well, I suppose I'll repack a few more times... good luck!!!

  3. See, I wear jeans to work everyday!!! I have thrown in lots of skirts and dresses, but I love my blue jeans! I'm a country girl at heart and I hope that we can get away with them!

  4. I have sunscreen (SFP 80! Bought it at Walgreens). A hat, sunglasses, UV-resistant long-sleeved shirts...then like you, how many of everything else to bring.

I'll bring what I wear at school, button-down shirts and dress pants, so my problem is how many of each, plus how much underwear and socks. One pair of jeans.

My, how quickly the suitcase fills up!

I also have a school SLR camera and a school-issued laptop, nice Nike shoes (back in the day we called them "sneakers"), black dress shoes and a sweater. We may need the latter in case the buildings are cold.

Also, workout clothes for the workout room, and since the hotel has a pool, swimming trunks. I'm a very early riser so if anybody is interested, we could have a pre-breakfast exercise session.

I'm bringing some writing pads to take notes with plus a few school papers if anybody is interested.

    See you tomorrow afternoon!

  5. ...and one more thing, what I'm bringing has to last me through the end of the month as my wife is joining me and we'll be celebrating our first anniversary! :-)

    Pack carefully!

  6. Jess... it must be nice to wear jeans to work everyday!!! We get to wear jeans on certain Fridays, but that's it. Anyway, good luck sorting through everything. See you on tomorrow.

  7. grrrr!!! i wanted to bring some copies of our papers, but my classroom is packed up, locked up and off limits because they are installing all my new technology and cleaning the carpets, etc. i didn't have enough foresight to think to grab them on the last day of school, like two weeks ago. We did a color graduation issue, and it looked awesome. I have pdf versions I can share, but i was going to bring hard copies. Oh well... :(

  8. I do yoga, too, but think I'll just use a towel instesd of shlepping a mat. I also enjoy swimming laps, but don't know if I'll do them am or pm -- probably a.m. because of the time change. Lynn

  9. Likewise . . . I am worried about what I am forgetting. I am so excited about meeting everyone that it is hard to focus. Normally I would be exhausted at this time of year. School is still not out for our system! However, I am buoyant with the idea of new friends, new thoughts, new surroundings . . .

  10. I had jeans in there but took them out because I'm running out of room! I have capris and dress pants, and "nice" tshirts. Who knows. It takes a lot to make me cold, so I'm not worrying about sweaters (besides, it would take up more room!). Far too many shoes, but I can't decide which ones to leave. By the time anyone reads this, we'll all be in Phoenix anyway. Don't forget your phone charger (this is mostly for me, as I tend to lay things out and then forget them). I fully intend to use the exercise room, but I doubt I'll be there in the morning. Without a couple of Diet Cokes, I'm pretty useless until around 9:30 a.m. BTW, no one mistakes me for a student, drat it all. But they do think I'm in my 30s, so that will have to do! ;)

  11. Fun post, Jess. Don't forget your AP Style Guides as requested in our syllabus. I'm "lucky" in that I'm past the age of caring about what I look like. I wear the same pants every day and a variety of thin shirts that look surprisingly just like each other, which I wear both at home and at school. I wear a standard multi-color winter pattern sweater whether it is 60 degrees or 90 degrees, and I have one pair of shoes. Oh yeah, all my socks are exactly alike, too. So, I've got lots of room in my bag if anyone needs it. Just come by the Maui airport tonight...LOL. If it's any consolation, Maui time is three hours behind Arizone, so while you'll all be up and fresh as daisies in the morning (especially those of you from the Midwest and East Coast), I'll be dragging around since it will be 4:00-5:00 AM my time. If you see me before 11:00AM, be kind. Good luck to everyone for getting everything you need in your bags. I leave in about 4 hours, but I'll see y'all tomorrow!Aloha!

  12. thanks for the reminder about the AP style book!!! thanks to my forgetfulness, I already have to run back to my house from my boyfriend's before the airport in the morning... I managed to leave my glasses sitting on my desk, right next to (i now realize) my mangled AP stylebook. i thought i was saving so much time by staying 20 minutes closer to the airport tonight, but i guess not. chalk it up to a blonde moment. prepare yourselves. i have a lot of them.

  13. Yay! I'm here. The hotel is beautiful and Super Shuttle was excellent. Just in case there is still anyone who has a few hours before traveling, I wanted to let you know that they have irons, ironing boards, blow dryers, and a magnifying mirror in the rooms, so if you were planning on bringing those, you can save a little space and weight by leaving those items home.
